Orbea was founded in Eibar, Spain, in 1840 by three brothers, Casimiro, Juan Manuel, and Mateo Orbea. It originally started as a rifle and gun producer but exited the business by 1930. By 1934 Orbea was all out participating in the competition, with Spaniard Mariano Canardo being the face of the Orbea road cycling team. Around 1969, the company was under hot water financially, due to which employees formed a cooperative and purchased the company from the Orbea family. A brand new factory was set up in Mallabia, which helped Orbea regain its position in the market. These days, Orbea has been successfully manufacturing mountain, road, junior, and triathlon bikes all around the globe.
